Flamingo 05 – Feeding Flamingo
Did you know that flamingos turn their heads upside-down to eat?
The term filter feeder might bring to mind the image of elegant whales dining on tiny hors d’oeuvres, but surprise, surprise! Flamingos are also part of the filter feeding club. Yes, these dainty pink birds have a refined palate for algae, small seeds, and even the tiniest of crustaceans—quite the fancy feast for our feathered friends. Who knew that beneath that flamboyant exterior lies a discerning taste for the finer things in shallow waters? Keep filtering, flamingos!
When mealtime arrives, a quirky flamingo pulls a gravity-defying move by plunging its head upside down into the water, aiming its bill at its own feet. With a comical head-swaying routine, it skillfully wields its tongue to work as a water pump within its bill. The bill’s comb-like plates act as a high-tech filter, causing water to gush out while cunningly detaining its delectable meal within.
And the flamingo in this free pattern looks as though it’s gazing into the water possibly getting ready to take a deep drink…or looking for its next meal.
The Pattern
I recently came across a set of watercolor flamingos. I decided to purchase the rights to create some cross stitch designs. These flamingos truly are attractive and charming subjects for cross stitch patterns.

When converting watercolor artwork into cross stitch patterns, I knew it was important to consider the level of detail and intricacy to ensure that the essence of the original artwork was preserved. Additionally, the choice of color palette and the number of thread shades can greatly impact the final results, so I created the designs each using two sizes of stitch counts, as well as different number of colors of DMC threads used.
It’s fascinating to witness the transformation of a two-dimensional artwork into a three-dimensional textured piece through the art of cross stitching.
