Flamingo 07 – Don’t Be Fooled

Did you know that a flamingo’s knees don’t actually bend backwards?

Flamingo legs are like a comical magic trick: what seems like their knee is actually their ankle! Their real knees are playing hide and seek higher up, behind the scenes of feathers and body parts. It’s like they’re perpetually tip-toeing, and when they bend their legs, it’s the ankle that steals the show with its fancy footwork.

Which got me pondering…what other creatures out there sport ankles so high that they appear to have backward-bending knees?

Dogs and cats can pull off some impressive yoga poses when they sit or crouch. Ever noticed how their hind legs can look like they bend backward? It’s like they’re showing off their flexibility, striking a pose that would make a human yoga instructor proud!

Horses : Did you know that horses have a joint called the “stifle joint,” which bends forward, and the hock joint, which bends backward? When they stand with their hind legs extended, the hock joint can give the impression of bending backward like a knee. It’s like they have a built-in way to do the moonwalk!

Some cheeky primates: Picture this – certain species of monkeys and apes, like the mischievous baboons, sport a leg structure that defies the norms. Their knee joint isn’t as pronounced, and when they stand upright, their lower leg can seem to extend backward. It’s like they’re playing a comical game of leg twister!

The Pattern

I recently came across a set of watercolor flamingos. I decided to purchase the rights to create some cross stitch designs. These flamingos truly are attractive and charming subjects for cross stitch patterns.

You may download a copy of the pattern for personal use. Please feel free to share this page, but you MAY NOT SHARE the patterns themselves.

When converting watercolor artwork into cross stitch patterns, I knew it was important to consider the level of detail and intricacy to ensure that the essence of the original artwork was preserved. Additionally, the choice of color palette and the number of thread shades can greatly impact the final results, so I created the designs each using two sizes of stitch counts, as well as different number of colors of DMC threads used.

It’s fascinating to witness the transformation of a two-dimensional artwork into a three-dimensional textured piece through the art of cross stitching.
