Flamingo 08 – Milk, It Does the Flamingo Good
Did you know that flamingo parents whip up a gourmet treat for their chicks? They cook up a fancy liquid known as crop milk—because why serve regular milk when you can serve gourmet flamingo-style?
A flamingo’s “milk” is actually a gourmet treat cooked up in its crop (yep, that’s part of its throat) and then regurgitated like a tiny chef presenting their best dish! While it might sound like something straight out of a bizarre cooking show, this crop milk is a tasty blend of proteins and fats—ideal for a growing flamingo chick! And the best part? Both parents can whip up this delightful concoction until junior is ready to dine solo, probably on something less… exotic!
The Pattern
I recently came across a set of watercolor flamingos. I decided to purchase the rights to create some cross stitch designs. These flamingos truly are attractive and charming subjects for cross stitch patterns.

When converting watercolor artwork into cross stitch patterns, I knew it was important to consider the level of detail and intricacy to ensure that the essence of the original artwork was preserved. Additionally, the choice of color palette and the number of thread shades can greatly impact the final results, so I created the designs each using two sizes of stitch counts, as well as different number of colors of DMC threads used.
It’s fascinating to witness the transformation of a two-dimensional artwork into a three-dimensional textured piece through the art of cross stitching.
