Hello, stitchy friends!
If you’ve been following along here at Goofin’ Off Around the Block for a little while, you know I love a good inspirational quote…and what a bonus when it’s stitched right into fabric — something you can glance at on a hard day and just give a little smile. This free pattern is exactly that kind of piece, and I think it’s is quickly becoming a favorite of mine.
Meet “Change is Beautiful” — a simple, elegant design featuring four fluttering butterflies, a couple of shooting stars, and a message we could aways use a little more of.
About the Design
This pattern is stitched in a single color (shown above in classic black and white), and it comes together at 169 stitches wide by 199 stitches tall — a great mid-size project for anyone looking for something a little more special than a quick weekend stitch, but not so large it’ll take you all year to finish.
The butterfly silhouettes make this a sweet nod to spring and summer…but a little hope, encouragement, and inspiration never go out of season. Whether you’re stitching it for yourself, gifting it to a friend going through a bit of a life transition, or just adding another motivational piece to your cross stitch “art” collection, this one’s meant to remind the stitcher that change…even the hard, scary, unexpected kind…really can be beautiful.

Make It Your Own — Get Creative with Color!
Here is the fun part: While the pattern is shown in classic black, this pattern is not limited to black embroidery floss and white aida. Because it’s a single-color design, it’s incredibly easy to customize:
- Go bold with a single color — try a deep purple, a rich navy, or a soft blush pink instead of black for a totally different mood.
- Try hand-dyed or variegated floss — a color-shifting thread would make the butterflies look like they’re catching the light as they flutter across the fabric.
- Stitch on hand-dyed fabric — a soft ombre or mottled background can add depth without adding a single extra stitch.
- Give each element its own color — imagine each butterfly in a different jewel tone, or the stars in a soft metallic gold or silver against the black butterflies.
- Match it to a season or person — pastel spring shades for a graduation gift, warm sunset tones for a summer piece, or even your favorite sports team’s colors for a fun twist.
- Try a rainbow gradient — stitch each butterfly progressively lighter or darker for an ombre effect across the whole piece.
There is really no wrong way to stitch this one. If you make it your own, I would love to see it — tag me or send me a photo, I mean it!
