Is there anything better than that first truly crisp morning of fall? You know the one — it’s when you finally dig out your favorite cardigan, brew up something warm, and settle in with a good book while the leaves outside are turning from green to gold.
If that little scene just made you sigh with a grin, then stitchy friend, you are exactly the one who I designed this pattern for.
I am so excited to introduce the first in a series I’m call Sweater Weather Stitches — a collection all about the cozy moments that make autumn fell like…well…autumn. And what better way to kick things off than with a design that’s basically a love letter to a lazy fall afternoon?
Meet the Pattern

This design brings together just about everything I love about the fall season into one cozy, weathered-wood scene: a stack of well-loved books, a steaming mug of coffee (or hot chocolate) with a cinnamon stick stirring things up, a few more cinnamon sticks scattered about like they fell out of the spice cabinet, a little pumpkin, a couple of chocolate chip cookies, a soft green blanket waiting to wrap you up, and a vase of orange chrysanthemums and greenery tucked into the background. It’s the kind of scene where you’d want to recreate your on your own coffee table. Now, you can stitch it instead (and maybe recreate it too).
I absolutely fell in love with the design of the mug on this one. It’s got a cozy plaid pattern wrapped around it with a single orange maple leaf front and center. Is it even autumn without something plaid in the mix? Inside, there is a full cup of coffee and creamer with a cinnamon stick resting inside. It’s the kind of detail I hope makes you want to go make your favorite warm fall drink for while you stich.
The Details
This pattern comes with two size options, so you can pick whichever works best for your project and your patience level that day:
- 300×300 stitches — a slightly smaller, less-detailed option
- 400×400 stitches — for crisper details and a larger finished piece
Both versions use 69 colors of DMC floss, so this one is best suited for intermediate to advanced stitchers who are comfortable working with a fuller palette and don’t mind a project with a bit more going on. If you’ve stitched a few pieces before and are looking for your next challenge as the weather cools down, this is a great one to sink your needle into.

Why “Sweater Weather Stitches”?
I wanted a series that could grow with the whole season — something that captures September’s first cool mornings, October’s pumpkins and golden leaves, and November’s cozy, gather-round-the-table feeling, all the way through. It takes me back to my childhood of blanket forts, my mom’s fall dessert bonanza, flowers past their bloom but still hanging on…and a nice warm mug of hot cocoa. This first pattern is just the beginning, so if coffee-and-books isn’t quite your vibe, don’t worry…there is more cozy in the works.
A Few Stitching Notes
Because this pattern includes so many little elements…the wood-grain background, the plaid on the mug, the texture of the blanket fringe, the layered petals on the chrysanthemums…I’d recommend organizing your floss ahead of time, whether that’s with a floss bag system, bobbins, or whatever method keeps you sane. With 69 colors, a little prep can go a long way toward keeping your stitching sessions relaxing instead of frustrating.
If you’re newer to multi-color pieces like this, I’d suggest stitching one page at time…maybe start in the upper-right corner with the leaves and working your way to the lower-right corner with the pumpkin and chocolate chip cookies…rather than jumping around the whole pattern. It’ll help the piece come together in a way that feels manageable, even with all of those colors in play.
Grab Your Free Pattern
This pattern is completely free, because I truly believe everyone should get to stitch a cozy piece this fall without worrying about a price tag. All I ask is that if you make one, you tag me or send me a photo — I love nothing more than seeing these patterns come to life in someone else’s hands (and floss colors).

Styling Your Finished Piece
Once it’s stitched up, this piece is begging to be framed and set out during pumpkin season…on a mantel, a bookshelf, or tucked in with your autumn decor. I love the idea of pairing it with a real cinnamon sticks in a little dish nearby, or setting it near an actual stack of your favorite fall reads. It also makes a sweet throw pillow for your sofa or gifted to someone who loves their coffee, their books, and a good knit blanket.

What’s Coming Next in the Series
This is just the first stop on the Sweater Weather Stitches train, and I’ve got more cozy scenes planned as we move through the season — think more pumpkins, more warm drinks, more soft blankets, and all the little details that make September through November feel so special. If there is a specific autumn scene or dessert you’d love to see turned into a pattern, I would genuinely love to hear about it in the comments.
