Introducing Fall Silhouettes 01: Pumpkins & Petals – A Free Cross Stitch Pattern

Something special happens in September, doesn’t it? One minute I’m enjoying a sunny afternoon out back, and the next I’m reaching for a cardigan and a lap quilt. The pumpkins start appearing at farm stands and in the grocery stores…and suddenly I’m craving cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice. Autumn has arrived! I don’t know about you, but the second that first cool morning hits, my stitching brain goes straight to harvest colors, cozy scenes, and everything pumpkin.

That’s exactly the feeling I was trying to capture with today’s free pattern, and I could not be more excited to share it with you.

Welcome to Fall Silhouettes, a brand-new pattern series here on the blog — and this pumpkin design is the very first release! If you’ve been stitching along with me for a while, you know I love a good series (hello, Whispers of Fall and Ears to the Gang), and this one is going to be a love letter to everything I adore about autumn: pumpkins, harvest displays, cozy nights, and the beauty of nature as it settles in for the fall season.

What’s In This Pattern

This design is a close-up, silhouette-style scene: two plump pumpkins nestled together, with a couple of scattered wildflowers beside them, and the whole grouping is wrapped in a tangle of fall leaves. It’s simple, it’s striking, and it’s the kind of piece that looks just as at home on a kitchen wall in October as it does tucked into a Thanksgiving display in November.

Because this design relies on a single color to create that beautiful black-and-white silhouette effect, it’s less about counting a rainbow of thread changes and more about enjoying the rhythm of the stitches as the picture builds beneath your needle. That said, I want to be up front with you: this pattern is designed for the advanced beginners or intermediate stitchers. The detail in places is delicate, and while it’s absolutely achievable, it’s not the easiest piece to stitch if you’re brand new to cross stitch.

You’ll get two size options in the downloads below:

  • 300×299 stitches – great if you want a slightly smaller, more portable project
  • 400×398 stitches – perfect if you’re after more detail and a larger finished piece

Both sizes use just one color, which is part of what makes this design so wonderfully flexible.

Why Black and White? (And Why it Doesn’t Have to Stay That Way)

I designed this pattern as a classic black-and-white silhouette — black stitching on white aida — because I think there is something striking about that stark contrast. It almost appears as if it’s been carved into wood or like an old botanical illustration…which feels perfect for a design rooted in nature and the changing of the seasons.

But here is one of the things I LOVE about silhouette patterns: they are endlessly adaptable, and I would genuinely love for you to make this piece your own.

Picture this design stitched in a rich pumpkin orange on a warm cream fabric…or a deep barn red for that classic feel…or a chocolately brown that echoes fall leaves and tree bark. Any one of those would be gorgeous.

And if you really want to have fun with it, try a variegated thread that shifts through oranges, golds, and browns as you stitch — the color changes would move right along with the leaves and petals in the design, almost like the piece is changing with the season.

You could also flip the whole approach and used dyed fabric instead. A hand-dyed piece in a warm autumn hue, stitched with black or a deep contrasting thread, would give you a completely different mood from the crisp black-and-white original. Honestly, the options here are endless, and that is exactly what I love about a good silhouette design — it adapts to your autumn…whatever that may look like.

A Design for Every Autumn Moment

What I like most about this piece is how many places it fits into the season. Stitch it up in September while the first hints of autumn are just starting to show. It works for October when pumpkins and fall leaves are everywhere you look. And it’s perfect for November at a harvest dinner or sitting proudly on display near your Thanksgiving table. This little scene of pumpkins, flowers, and gathered leaves works quietly in the background of the whole season, from the first cool breeze all the way through the last bite of pumpkin pie.

It’s also just a lovely reminder to slow down and notice the small things…two pumpkins, wildflowers, a scattering of leaves…nature doing what it does season after season. Sometimes the simplicity of nature is what sticks with us, and I think that’s exactly what makes silhouette designs like this one so satisfying to stitch.

More From the Fall Silhouettes Series

This pumpkin design is just the beginning. I’ve got more pieces planned for this series as we move deeper into harvest season, so if silhouettes, autumn scenes, and cozy nature-inspired stitching are your thing, you’ll want to keep an eye on the blog over the next few weeks. Think more scenes built around the texture of the season — think branches, gourds, and quiet harvest moments…all rendered in that same striking black-and-white style (or whatever color twist you decide to give them).

If you stitch this pattern, I would absolutely love to see it! Whether you stitch in classic black-and-white, a bold pumpkin orange, or a moody variegated thread, tag me or send me a photo…nothing makes my day like seeing these designs come to life in your own colors and your own homes.

One Last Thing Before You Go

Autumn has a way of asking us to pay attention…to the changing of sunsets, the air cooling, and the leaves letting go. I hope this little pumpkin silhouette gives you reason to slow down for a few stitching sessions this season, whether you’re working through it in the October sunlight or November lamplight. However you choose to stitch it, and whatever color you choose to make it, I hope it brings a bit of harvest coziness into your home.

Thank you so much for stopping by and stitching along with me. Here’s to a beautiful, leaf-covered, pumpkin-spiced season ahead.
